Our History

Resonance Voice Training has been in existence since 2003 and became an incorporated company in 2012.

The seeds of the company were sown when the Founder, Louise Kerr found herself at a career crossroads. Having spent years as an actress and singer and seeking new challenges she undertook the globally recognised MA in Voice Studies at Central School of Speech and Drama. From the start of her voice training she had the idea of setting up a company once qualified. She already had an understanding of corporate training through her experiences with drama based training organisations prior to her decision to leave the acting profession. Having an extra qualification gave her the skills and confidence to do it.

Louise had seen many presentation skills workshops run by others. She felt that there was a gap in the market for training that gave people useful and applied practical knowledge and techniques for managing themselves when giving presentations, or when speaking at work to management or in interviews. It appeared to be the case and often still is, people have to sink or swim when presenting or speaking out in all sorts of work related situations. Knowing how skilled actors were in voice and performance it seemed obvious that these skills were transferable. Twenty years ago there were very few companies that managed the vocal delivery, the nerves – the physical somatic package, as well as the theory of presenting and structure. There were no visible voice companies working specifically in business when the company was set up. Individuals offered vocal coaching but it was generally felt that voice training was not for business. There were many diverse Dramabased companies in existence but the Director felt that there was a real need for something very niche – voice.

Early clients were Greenwich and Nottingham Universities. Word of mouth led to others such as Durham University and Teesside University becoming and remaining clients to this day. The Director’s public persona was helped by appearing on Channel Four and Channel Five as an onscreen voice coach in reality TV programmes such as Faking It. Growing business gave her confidence to tender for government jobs and contracts.

Two successful tenders helped the business expand in early days. The then Department for Industry had a Consultancy called PTSC which took on Resonance as a partner for regular workshops and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office contracted the company from 2007. Regular clients were giving annual repeat work and freelance associates were taken on.

Over the years whilst voice development (which in actuality is a global physical training) is still at the core of all of Resonance workshops the company regards itself more as a communication skills organisation today. It empowers and gives confidence alongside many useful practical performance skills and coaching.

Many of Resonance repeat clients remain today, for example Durham and Teesside Universities, The Wellcome Trust, The Health Foundation, Morrisons, GCHQ, Girlguiding, Stork and May, the high end transition experts, and The Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Other corporate clients include Zentiva, Mitie, Sea Drill and Kilburn and Strode patent lawyers.
